Pentecost Sunday

Centering Practice

Today we celebrate Pentecost — the gift of the Holy Spirit giving birth to the Church, empowering our witness in the beautiful diversity of God’s world. The Spirit calls us to live out resurrection life and to join God in the renewing of all things!

  • Begin by closing our eyes and taking several slow, deep breaths
  • Seated, standing, arms extended and waving ribbons (red is the traditional color of Pentecost, to symbolize fire of the Spirit)

Call to Worship

Holy Spirit of God,
breathe upon us, fill our hearts with love,
and move us to act with Your power.

May Your fire cause us to burn bright,
but not to be consumed,
as we speak of the wonders of God together.
Amen.

Worship Songs

Great Are You Lord / Oh Our Lord

All the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry
These bones will sing
Great are You Lord!

Oh, oh, oh our Lord
Oh, oh, oh our Lord
How majestic is Your name
In all the earth

We behold the breaking dawn
The light that shines over everyone
We look to You, we long for You, oh Lord

We behold the rising sun
The earth awakes, Your hope has come
We look to You, we long for You, oh Lord

We behold the falling rain
Like waters rise, come flood this place
We reach for You, we cling to You, oh Lord

Oh Your name is a light in the darkness
Oh Your name is a word of truth
Oh Your name, oh Your name

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
To You only

Prayer of Confession

God of power and possibility:
with the flame of Your Spirit, You empower us;
with the breath of Your Spirit, You renew us.

We confess the ways we ignore Your Spirit,
in our thoughts, words, and actions.
For the ways we closer our hearts and lives to You,
Forgive us, O God, we pray:

— Moment of silent prayer —

Spirit of God,
transform and direct our lives,
reawaken our love for God and others,
and renew us to serve the world You love.
Amen.

Assurance of God’s Love

Prayers of the People

The breath of the Spirit fills our lungs and enables us to pray for those we care about. We invite you to take three deep breaths,
and with each exhale, to pray silently for someone you care about.

And now we’ll pray out loud together:

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Amen.

Worship Song

You Hold It All Together

On mountaintops, You stay the same
On valley low, You never change

And we believe that we will see
The goodness of the Lord
We’re confident as seasons change
Your faithfulness remains

You come at the right time
When we least expect it
Never behind

So why would we be surprised
When You deliver every time

God of our present
God of our future
You write our story
You hold it all together

Scripture Reading

Genesis 16:13

13 (Hagar) gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
Together: Thanks be to God.

Worship Song

You Don’t Have to Lose Heart

Hey now, you don’t have to lose heart
Hey now, we are only at the start
Of what He’s doing here

Hey now, you don’t have to lose heart
Hey now, we are only at the start
Of what He’s doing here… He’s here

So let us put our trust
In the One who carries us
So we can let go
Of every disappointment
Let us cling to love
To the hope ahead of us
So we can hold on
To every single promise

Brother, when your troubles weigh you down
Sister, fix your eyes on higher ground
On the peace yet to come, to come

Let us rest here in the hands
Of the One who made all things
Let us rest here in the plans
Of the One who knows all things

Benediction
