The Second Sunday in Lent

Centering Practice

As we continue to journey together through this season of Lent, let us wait on the Lord with faith, hope, and love. Once again, today’s centering practice comes from Cole Arthur Riley, creator of Black Liturgies

Inhale: The night is long
Exhale: My soul keeps watch

Call to Worship

As we journey together
during this Lenten season,
we remember:

The everyday places we walk
are holy ground;
and the ordinary people we meet
are deeply loved by God.

In these thin spaces,
steadfast love and faithfulness meet.
From ashes and dust, God creates beauty.
Amen.

Worship Song

The Love of the Father

Lift up your voices and lift up your praise
Join with the heavens, declaring the wonders
Of His faithfulness forever

Sing of the victory, the hope of the world
The Saviour has risen, the Spirit has come to
Bring us into love forever

We are the people of God
With the freedom of hope in our hearts
How great is the love of the Father

Lifted from darkness and into the light
The sons and the daughters are loved at a price
Our God has made us His forever

This is the song of the redeemed
The ransomed and the free
Given life at such a price
This is love, this is love

And when the Father calls us home
And we see Him on the throne
Hear the voices sing as one
This is love, this is love

Everything

God in my living, there in my breathing
God in my waking, God in my sleeping

God in my resting, there in my working
God in my thinking, God in my speaking

Be my everything… be my everything…
Be my everything… be my everything…

God in my hoping, there in my dreaming
God in my watching, God in my waiting

God in my laughing, there in my weeping
God in my hurting, God in my healing

Christ in me, Christ in me
Christ in me, the hope of glory
You are everything

Christ in me, Christ in me
Christ in me, the hope of glory
Be my everything… be my everything…

Prayer of Confession

Loving God,
ever-creating, ever-loving, ever-present:
when things around us feel chaotic,
You are steadfast love.

When we waver, make us faithful;
In our weakness; be our strength;
As we struggle, carry us;
Hear us, O God, we pray:

— Moment of silent prayer —

We worship You,
Creator, Christ and Spirit,
ever Three and ever One.
Amen.

Prayers of the People

For today’s Prayers of the People, we will literally stand together on behalf of our friends, families, neighborhoods, nation, and world. For each phrase that speaks to your heart, please stand (and remain standing). After people have a moment to stand, we will say out loud together, “Lord, have mercy.”

Worship Song

Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to Thee

There is a sign at the sight of Thee
Merciful and mighty
God in three Persons
God in three Persons… blessed Trinity

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty
All Thy works
Shall praise Thy Name
In earth and sky and sea

There is a sign at the sight of Thee
There is none beside Thee
God in three Persons
God in three Persons… blessed Trinity

Scripture Reading

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10,12

9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:

10  If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up…

12  Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
Together: Thanks be to God.

The Three Sisters

Pastor Dan

Conversation Questions:

  • Like the “three sisters,” what are gifts we can offer to support each other in different stages of growth?
  • Picture Anchor & Hope as a biodiverse ecosystem: how does our life together provide health & life to people around us? What are different onramps for connection? What are gifts of blessing (food) and encouragement (shelter) that our life together can provide to others?

Worship Song

Teach Us Your Ways

Teach us Your ways… teach us Your ways
As we learn from one another
Learn to love each other
Teach us Your ways

Teach us to give… teach us to give
Give ourselves for one another
Learn to love each other
Teach us to give

Teach us to weep… teach us to weep
Let us weep with one another
Learn to love each other
Teach us to weep
