The Second Sunday in Lent

Centering Practice

We invite you to slow down, breathe, and connect with God, each other, and yourself. Begin by closing our eyes and taking several slow, deep breaths. Today’s centering practice is adapted from Black Liturgies by Cole Arthur Riley:

  • Author Morgan Harper Nichols reminds us, “There is a reason the sky gets dark at night — we were not meant to see everything all the time. We were meant to rest and trust even in the darkness”
  • Inhale: The world seems dim
  • Exhale: But we dream in the dark

Call to Worship

Adapted from Cole Arthur Riley

As we journey together through Lent,
we remember this sacred truth:

We are born of dust and ash and dirt;
brought to life by the breath of God.

We are not what we once were.
The steadfast love of God guides us,
even through the wilderness. Amen.

Worship Songs

Oh Our Lord

We behold the breaking dawn
The light that shines over everyone
We look to You, we long for You, oh Lord

We behold the rising sun
The earth awaits, Your hope has come
We look to You, we long for You, oh Lord

Oh, oh, oh, our Lord
Oh, oh, oh, our Lord
How majestic is Your name in all the earth

We behold the falling rain
Like waters rise, flood this place
We reach for You, we cling to You, oh Lord

Oh, Your name is a light in the darkness
Oh, Your name is the word of truth
Oh Your name, oh Your name

Called Me Higher

I could just sit
I could just sit and wait for all Your goodness
Hope to feel Your presence

And I could just stay
I could just stay right where I am
and hope to feel You
Hope to feel something again

But You have called me higher
You have called me deeper
And I’ll go where You will lead me Lord

And I could hold on
I could hold on to who I am and never let You
Change me from the inside

And I could be safe
I could be safe here in Your arms
and never leave home
Never let these walls down

And I will be Yours
I will be Yours for all my life

Prayer of Confession

God of grace,
as we journey through the wilderness,
we need Your presence & love to guide us.

When we turn away from You, forgive us;
When we struggle with doubt, uphold us;

In our sorrow & despair, comfort us;
Hear us, O God, we pray:

— Moment of silent prayer —

God of mercy,
Your love brings healing & hope.

Send us into Your world
as messengers of Your love.
Amen.

Assurance of God’s Love

Prayers of the People

A collect from our community, written by Kathy Lee

God of peace,
You restore hope
and goodness in all things.

Lord, will You help us
to open our hearts and minds
to be more attentive

to the ways Your Spirit moves in our lives.
Help us to be attentive
to where You are calling us

to step out in confidence and faith —
to embody Your healing love
and compassion in a world

that is broken and hurting,

just as Christ modeled to us.
Through Jesus Christ
who instills hope in us, we pray,
Amen.

Worship Song

Kingdom Come

God, let Your kingdom come
May Your will be done
God, let Your kingdom come

Earth is groaning and we are longing
For Your kingdom to come
All creation and all of heaven
Join their voices as one

Hope is stirring, joy arising
As we look to the day
When all injustice will bow
And every voice will cry out
Holy is Your name

Lift up your heads, all the weak and the poor
The Lord is at hand and His kingdom is yours

Lift up your hearts, all who suffer and mourn
The Lord is at hand and His kingdom is yours

Lift up your eyes, all who hunger for more
The Lord is at hand and His kingdom is yours

Lift up a shout, let the earth hear your voice
The Lord is at hand and His kingdom is yours

I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken

Scripture Reading

Habakkuk 1:2-4, 12-13; 3:2

2 O Lord, how long shall I cry for help,
and you will not listen?
Or cry to you “Violence!”
and you will not save?

3 Why do you make me see wrongdoing
and look at trouble?
Destruction and violence are before me;
strife and contention arise.

4 So the law becomes slack,
and justice never prevails.
The wicked surround the righteous;
therefore judgment comes forth perverted.

12 Are you not from of old,
O Lord my God, my Holy One?
You shall not die.

13 Your eyes are too pure to behold evil,
and you cannot look on wrongdoing

2 Lord, I have heard of your fame;
I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord.
Renew them in our day,
in our time make them known;
in wrath remember mercy.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Together: Thanks be to God.

Worship Song

Invitation Fountain w Build My Life

All who are weak
All who are weary
Come to the rock
Come to the fountain

All who have sailed
On the rivers of heartache
Come to the sea
Come on be set free

If You lead me Lord
I will follow
Where You lead me Lord

I will go

Come and heal me Lord
I will follow
Where You lead me Lord
I will go, I will go…

All who are weak
All who are weary
Come to the rock
Come to the fountain

All who have climbed
On the mountains of heartache
Reach to the stars
Come on and give Your life

I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken

Benediction
