Reset Sunday Planning Guide

Colorful gradient with text overlaid, "reset sunday"

On the fifth Sunday of months with 5 Sundays, Anchor & Hope has committed to a practice we call “Reset Sunday.” Instead of gathering in community together on that day, we encourage you to connect with God, others, and yourself out in God’s world!

Be intentional in meeting God in deep rest, deep beauty, and deep joy of the Sabbath, which was given to us as a gift from God! We always encourage you to get a little more sleep, or to eat something good, or to see something beautiful — to engage with your senses to see God’s goodness, beauty, and truth in the world!

Please use the following Reset Sunday Planning Guide to help you discern & plan for a meaningful experience:

Note: The first four questions are adapted from Marva J. Dawn’s “Keeping the Sabbath Day Wholly”

Cease

What are you not going to do on the Sabbath?

Examples: Stay away from work (maybe you need to get things done by Saturday night); put your anxieties and worries on paper and then put it away, unplug from electronics, etc.

Rest

How will you plan to rest on the Sabbath?

Examples: Sleep in and/or take a nap, spend time reading a book, take time to exercise, spend time with God in extended silence, get a massage, wear clothes that are comfortable or make you feel good, go for a relaxing hike, listen to the waves crashing on the shore, etc.

Embrace

How can you honor your love & commitment to God and others today?

Examples: Connect your faith with your life & purpose, spend some time reflecting on what God is calling you to, spend time with loved ones, pray for others, demonstrate love to those you care for, be kind to yourself, serve your neighbors, etc.

Feast

In what ways will you celebrate God’s goodness & joy today?

Examples: Enjoy a good meal, spend some time laughing, listen to or play music, enjoy nature and movement, go to a museum, explore San Diego, find places of beauty, etc.

Worship

Consider when you will engage with the Reset Sunday guide for next week: As you start the day? In the middle of the day? To mark the end of the Sabbath day? Are there other worship practices that will help you love God more?

Connect

With whom will you share your Reset Sunday experience? Your household, friends, neighbors? How can you open your heart to “divine interruptions” from the Spirit or others? How will you connect with yourself in a meaningful way that makes you feel a little more whole?

Align

Set your intention with your household (or whoever you plan on spending your Reset Sunday with) and make a plan for the day. Remember, the goal is not to “maximize” your schedule but, rather, to create breathing room for rest, beauty & joy!
