Matthew 26:36-46
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and began to be grieved and agitated. Then he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.” And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me, yet not what I want but what you want.” Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again he went away for the second time and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Now the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us be going. Look, my betrayer is at hand.”

Psalm 1:1-3, The Message
How well God must like you—
you don’t walk in the ruts of those blind-as-bats,
you don’t stand with the good-for-nothings,
you don’t take your seat among the know-it-alls.Instead you thrill to God’s Word,
you chew on Scripture day and night.
You’re a tree replanted in Eden,
bearing fresh fruit every month,
Never dropping a leaf,
always in blossom.
Reflection Questions
- What do you love about trees?
- In what ways can you become a tree planted by streams of water? What nourishment do you need? What kind of fruit can you bear for the benefit of others?
Prayer
Jesus, our Living Water,
cause us to be like trees
planted near the River of life,
putting down deep roots,
providing shade and relief to others,
bearing fruit for the healing of the world.May we join Your Spirit in building
beautiful, diverse gardens of hope
all around us.

Genesis 3:21-24
And the Lord God made garments of skins for the man and for his wife and clothed them. Then the Lord God said, “See, the humans have become like one of us, knowing good and evil, and now they might reach out their hands and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever”— therefore the Lord God sent them forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which they were taken. He drove out the humans, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a sword flaming and turning to guard the way to the tree of life.

- Where do you feel the pain of broken relationships (with God, others, creation, yourself)?
- How do you hope Jesus shows up in those places of pain?

Creator God,
You created the earth, whole and round;
You created us to be whole people.But we have become fragmented,
cracked and broken.
We have been broken by false promises,
lost relationships, shattered trust.
We have become cracked
with the experience of systemic sin:
prejudice, oppression and fear.

building up walls instead of lending hands.Forgive us when we have done the breaking,

Let Your light shine through our cracks and scars

Genesis 2:8-9, 15
And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil… The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.

Centering Practice
In Psalm 139, the psalmist marvels at how precious and vast are God’s thoughts — they even outnumber the grains of sand!
- Begin by closing our eyes and taking several slow, deep breaths
- Picture your favorite beach, imagine standing on the sand, letting waves wash over your feet — what do you hear, what do you see?
- Look up and down the shoreline at the infinite number of grains of sand, and enter into our worship space with gratitude and wonder at the precious thoughts of God

Give thanks to the Lord, for God is good!
God’s steadfast love endures forever.
Let the redeemed rejoice
in the wide embrace of God.To those in darkness, God brings light.

Friends and neighbors,
we pause during our week
to observe Ash Wednesday together
as a faith community.We remember that God made us
from fragile, blessed dust
And breathes through us
the breath of life and love.From dust we are created in God’s image
and to God’s good dust we shall return.
Today we begin our 40-day Lenten journey
to discover who we are created to be
as God’s beloved.In daily practices of prayer and service
we will embark upon this Lenten journey.
So come, let us pray
for strength and imagination to follow Jesus
wherever He will lead us this Lent.

Ash Wednesday: Seeds Born of Fire

Giant sequoias are the largest trees on Earth.
They can grow for more than 3,000 years.
But without fire, they cannot reproduce.
The giant sequoias really are born of fire.
A fire gives them 3 things they need for regeneration.
The first one is,
it punches a hole in the forest –
that allows there to be more light and more water
for the sequoia seedlings.The second thing it does is,
it heats the cones up in the mature sequoia trees,
without harming the trees and those cones open
and there’s a rain of seeds on the ground.And, the final thing it’s done is,
it’s cleared away all the leaves that have built up.
Because sequoia seeds need to hit bare mineral soil
before they can germinate, and survive well.Then the winter storms come
and bury them in a blanket of snow.
And then when the spring comes
they have the ideal conditions… its warmer… it’s really wet
and those seeds will take off and become seedlings.From their birth among the ashes,

these seedlings have become the groves we see today,
with trees nearly 300 feet tall.Reflection Questions:
- Everything in life that matters requires risk & sacrifice. What or who is so close to your heart that you’re willing to sacrifice for them?
- Could this Lent season create the necessary space in your life to let in more light or water?
- How can you open your heart to God & others over the next 6 weeks to allow the seeds of God’s dream to be scattered?
- Is there room for God’s dream to grow in your life? Are there “leaves” that have built up which need to be swept away?
- As you make space for quietness in your heart (through silence and/or coloring), what seeds are you planting today? At Eastertime, what’s a word or short phrase that captures the transformation or growth you hope to see happen?
