    Centering Practice

Scripture says, many waters cannot quench love. Let’s gather in the flow of God’s love together this morning.

    • — Yoga flow —
    • Together: Out of our hearts, let the Living Water of God’s love flow!

    Call to Worship

    based on Isaiah 58

    During this season of Lent,
may our fasting loose the chains of injustice
    and set the oppressed free.
May our light break forth like the dawn.

    Guide us, Lord,
    through a sun-scorched land.
    Make us a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.
    Amen.

    Worship Songs

    Oh Our Lord

    We behold the breaking dawn
The light that shines over everyone
We look to You, we long for You, oh Lord

    We behold the rising sun
The earth awaits, Your hope has come
We look to You, we long for You, oh Lord

    Oh, oh, oh, our Lord
    Oh, oh, oh, our Lord
How majestic is Your name in all the earth

    We behold the falling rain
Like waters rise, flood this place
We reach for You, we cling to You, oh Lord

Oh, Your name is a light in the darkness
Oh, Your name is the word of truth
Oh Your name, oh Your name

    Send the Rain

    Lord, we come to You
    Now with open hands
    Broken lives and dreams
    Washed up on the sand

    We’ve been beaten down
But still we choose to stand
    We choose to stand

    Lord, we long for You
    For Your hand to move
    Heal this barren land
    Come and make it new

    Jesus, You’re the life
    That is breaking through
    You’re breaking through

The saints of old in ancient days
    They worked the ground
    that we reap from today

So use our hands to cultivate
    The harvest that
    our children’s children taste
We’re ready God, so send the rain

    Lord, we’ll follow You
    To unbroken earth
    On the path not used
    Where new hope is birthed

    We will work as one
    Holding to Your truth
    To Your truth

    Heal the ruined cities
We destroyed with our own hands
    Bring us back together
Let us see the promised land

    Pour out Your Spirit
On this dry and thirsty ground
    O God of the harvest
Could it be right here and now
Could it be right here and now

    Open up the heavens,
    let Your rain fall down
We are thirsty, we are thirsty

    Prayer of Confession

    Jesus, our Living Water,
    everywhere Your river flows,
You sustain, renew, and refresh life.

We confess the dryness of our lives:
jagged words we’ve thought & spoken,
    crumbling relationships, brittle hearts.
Forgive us, O God, we pray:

    — Moment of silent prayer —

Rain down Your mercy upon us, O God.
Wash away the dust & grime.
Renew us in Your ever-flowing stream.
    Amen.

    Assurance of God’s Love

    Prayers of the People

After each phrase, the congregation will reply with one voice:
    Lord, have mercy.

For all who suffer from thirst or hunger…
For those who are weary and in need of strength…
For those oppressed by war, violence, and hatred…
For our neighbors near and far…
For ourselves, our families, and our church…
    Amen.

    Worship Song

    Open Up

You heard the cry of our hearts
    And You came down
Freely You gave us Your love
    Showing us how

Make me an instrument of Your peace
Where there is hatred, let me sow love
    Where there is darkness
    Let me shine light and…

    May Your love
    Cause us to open up
Cause us to open up our hearts

    May Your light
Cause us to shine so bright
That we bring hope into the dark

All that we do without love
    It means nothing
Grant us the courage to give
    As You’re calling

    Hope for the hopeless
    Your love is

    Strength in our weakness
    Your love is

    May we love
    As You love

    Scripture Reading

    Mark 9:41

41 For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.

    Together: Thanks be to God.

    Centering Practice

This morning, together we seek God: here in this place, at this moment, together

    • Take a few moments to breathe
    • As we think about place, find a word that describes “home” to help center you this morning (belonging, peace, restoration, laughter)

    Call to Worship

As we continue our Lenten journey
we remember that from dust we came,
and to dust we shall return.

We remember that from home we came,
and to home we shall return.
    Amen.

    Called Me Higher

    I could just sit
I could just sit and wait for all Your goodness
    Hope to feel Your presence

    And I could just stay
I could just stay right where I am
    and hope to feel You
    Hope to feel something again

But You have called me higher
    You have called me deeper
And I’ll go where You will lead me Lord

    And I could hold on
I could hold on to who I am and never let You
    Change me from the inside

    And I could be safe
I could be safe here in Your arms
    and never leave home
    Never let these walls down

    And I will be Yours
I will be Yours for all my life

    Prayer of Confession

    Merciful God,
We confess how easily we wander from You.
We have hungered for that which does not satisfy.

You speak, but we have not listened.
Creation cries out, but we do not hear.
    Forgive us, O God.

    — Moment of silent prayer —

Lead us, Lord, on every path we walk.
Renew a right spirit within us,
to love You and our neighbors well.
    Amen.

    Have My Heart

    You love with no reservations
    You’re not looking for perfection
And there’s no need in me pretending
    I’ll give You everything
    I’ll give You everything

    You deserve my full attention
    Nothing less than my devotion
Oh, speak to me and I will listen
    I’ll give You everything
    I’ll give You everything

    Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
    You can have my heart
    You can have my heart

Be the Lord of my emotions
Set me free from selfish motives
And search me ’til there’s nothing hidden
    And I’ll give You everything
    Yes, I’ll give You everything

    My heart is Yours forever
    My heart is Yours forever

    Benediction

  • Ash Wednesday liturgy • 02-14-24

    Call to Worship

Adapted from adapted from the United Church of Christ (Genesis 2:7; 3: 19 Psalm 104: 29-30; John 1: 18)

    Friends and neighbors,
    we pause during our week
    to observe Ash Wednesday together
    as a faith community.

We remember that God made us
    from fragile, blessed dust
    And breathes through us
the breath of life and love.

From dust we are created in God’s image
and to God’s good dust we shall return.
Today we begin our 40-day Lenten journey
to discover who we are created to be
    as God’s beloved.

In daily practices of prayer and service
we will embark upon this Lenten journey.
    So come, let us pray
for strength and imagination to follow Jesus
wherever He will lead us this Lent.
    Amen.

    Prayer

    by John Paarlberg

    Gracious God,
You created us out of the dust of the earth
and breathed into us the breath of life.
By Your hand we live and to Your hands we return
when all our days are done.
Grant that the awareness of our mortality
may lead us not to fear, but to faith.

    In our weakness,
    teach us to look to You for strength;
    in our failures,
    to turn to You and find forgiveness;
    and in our dying,
    to await the gift of everlasting life;
    through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Amen.

    Worship Song

    Lord, I Need You

    Lord, I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
    Without You I fall apart
You’re the One that guides my heart

    Lord, I need You
    Oh, I need You
    Every hour I need You
    My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

Where sin runs deep Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
And where You are, Lord, I am free
    Holiness is Christ in me

Teach my song to rise to You
    When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on You
Jesus, You’re my hope and stay

    Scripture Reading

    John 12:23-24

    To be read aloud together:

23 Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
    Together: Thanks be to God.

    Reflection
Vintage illustration of mustard seeds and plants with text overlaid, "The Season of Lent: Seeds"

Ash Wednesday: Seeds Born of Fire
    Pastor Dan So

Giant sequoias are the largest trees on Earth.
They can grow for more than 3,000 years.
But without fire, they cannot reproduce.
The giant sequoias really are born of fire.

A fire gives them 3 things they need for regeneration.
    The first one is,

it punches a hole in the forest –
that allows there to be more light and more water
    for the sequoia seedlings.

The second thing it does is,
it heats the cones up in the mature sequoia trees,
without harming the trees and those cones open
and there’s a rain of seeds on the ground.

And, the final thing it’s done is,
it’s cleared away all the leaves that have built up.
Because sequoia seeds need to hit bare mineral soil

before they can germinate, and survive well.

    Then the winter storms come
and bury them in a blanket of snow.
And then when the spring comes

they have the ideal conditions… its warmer… it’s really wet
and those seeds will take off and become seedlings.

From their birth among the ashes,
these seedlings have become the groves we see today,
with trees nearly 300 feet tall.

From “Why the Giant Sequoia Needs Fire to Grow”

    Reflection Questions:

    • Everything in life that matters requires risk & sacrifice. What or who is so close to your heart that you’re willing to sacrifice for them?
    • Could this Lent season create the necessary space in your life to let in more light or water?
    • How can you open your heart to God & others over the next 6 weeks to allow the seeds of God’s dream to be scattered?
    • Is there room for God’s dream to grow in your life? Are there “leaves” that have built up which need to be swept away?
    • As you make space for quietness in your heart (through silence and/or coloring), what seeds are you planting today? At Eastertime, what’s a word or short phrase that captures the transformation or growth you hope to see happen?

    Worship Song

    Expectation

    You redeem our past
You take what’s old and broken
    You’re breathing in new life

    Rhythms of Your grace
    Moving us to freedom
    From darkness into light

You will make all things new
    You’ll bring Your kingdom here
    We wait in expectation

We lift our eyes to You
    Salvation’s drawing near
    We wait in expectation

    You have overcome
    The troubles we are facing
    You’re standing here with us

    Oppression cannot win
    And anxious thoughts are broken
By the pow’r of Jesus’ name

    Benediction

from “An Ash Wednesday Liturgy” written by Tim Graves and posted on LiturgyBits.

    Created from dust,
held together by God’s extravagant love,
    Turn away from sin,
and leave today embracing God’s love.
    Amen.

    Centering Practice

Today, we encounter the glory of God revealed to us in Jesus

    • Take a few moments to breathe
    • As you sit, pray: “Be my peace”
    • As you stand, pray: “Help me grow”
    • As you spread your arms, pray: “Shine Your light”

    Call to Worship

In the creation of all things,
God said, “Let there be light.”
    In the face of Jesus,
the glory of God shines bright.

May the light of the Spirit
fill us with grace, wisdom, and mercy
to love God and our neighbors.
    Amen.

    Worship Songs

    Sound of Adoration

    When we were lost ones
You were the Shepherd that carried us home
    When we were prodigals
You ran to meet us with open arms
And we can’t hold back our praise

    When we were refugees
You were the One who took us in
    When we were enemies
You paid the price for all our sin
And we can’t hold back our praise

This is the sound of adoration
    Oh, how we love You
    Jesus, we love You

You are the joy of all creation
    Oh, how we love You
    Jesus, we love You

    You are the Risen One
You conquered death and made a way
    You sang our freedom song
Now we are dancing on our chains
And we can’t hold back our praise

By the cross, I am free
    Your grace changes everything
I was blind, now I see
    Your grace changes everything

    You Keep On Getting Better

I will sing of Your goodness
I will sing of Your love
    Though the seasons come quickly
    You have always been enough

Though the night may get darker
    Though the waiting seems long
    You have always been faithful
To remind me of Your love

    You are good
    In the morning I’ll sing
    You are good
    In the evening I’ll sing
    You are good
    You are good to me

    You have always been patient
    You have always been kind
    You’re consistent through the ages
Oh, what a friend of mine

So I’ll remind my soul to bless You
    Standing firm upon Your truth
    Knowing You cannot be shaken
‘Cause I’ve seen what You can do, oh

So teach my song to rise to You
    When temptation comes my way
When I cannot stand I’ll fall on You
Jesus, You’re my hope and stay

    Worship Song

    You Hold It All Together

You come at the right time
    When I least expect it
    Never behind

So why would I be surprised
    When You deliver every time?

On mountaintops, You stay the same
On valley low, You never change

And I believe that I will see
    The goodness of the Lord
    I’m confident as seasons change
    Your faithfulness remains

You go, You go before me
    To prepare a blessing
    You madе a way

It’s more than I could imagine
    More than I can fathom
    Or comprehend

    God of my present
    God of my future
    You write my story
    You hold it all together

    Scripture Reading

    Mark 4:30-32

30 He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31  It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32  yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

    Centering Practice

Let’s center ourselves in the strong love of Christ today.

    • Take a few moments to breathe
    • Find a quiet place and name some of the things that throw you off-balance
    • Now, imagine God drawing near in a way that feels like Good News — how will God strengthen, encourage, and lift you up?

    Call to Worship

We are all made in the image of God,
blessed with dignity and loved by God.
    The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it;
the world, and those who live in it.

    Let everything that has breath,
    praise the Lord!
    Amen.

    Worship Songs

    Great Things

Come let us worship our King
Come let us bow at His feet
    He has done great things

See what our Savior has done
    See how His love overcomes
    He has done great things
    He has done great things

    O Hero of Heaven
    You conquered the grave
You free every captive and break every chain
O God, You have done great things

We dance in Your freedom, awake and alive
O Jesus, our Savior, Your name lifted high
O God, You have done great things

You’ve been faithful through every storm
    You’ll be faithful forevermore
    You have done great things

And I know You will do it again
For Your promise is “Yes and amen”
    You will do great things
    God, You do great things

    Hallelujah God, above it all
    Hallelujah God, unshakable
Hallelujah, You have done great things

    Hallelujah God, above it all
    Hallelujah God, unshakable
Hallelujah, You have done great things
    You’ve done great things

    Great Are You Lord

You give life, You are love
You bring light to the darkness
    You give hope, You restore
    every heart that is broken
    And great are You, Lord

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise

    We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

All the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
    Great are You, Lord

    Community Prayer

    God of compassion and mercy,
thank You for Your boundless love,
    which we receive through Jesus.

We pray for those people and places
who need to experience more of Jesus’ love,
    all around the world:

    — Moment of silent prayer —

Help us to love like You, O God
    and to create communities
of flourishing, peace, and joy all around us.
    Amen.

    Worship Song

Build My Life / Open Space

I will build my life upon Your love
    It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken

My heart is an open space
For You to come and have Your way
    I’m open, I’m open

Holy, there is no one like You
    There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder

And show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love
    To those around me

    Scripture Reading

    Psalm 126

1 When the Lord brought back the captives of Zion,
We were like those who dream.
2 Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
3 The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.

    4 Restore our captives, Lord,
    like streams in the Negev.

5 Those who sow with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping,
        carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
        carrying sheaves with them.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
    Together: Thanks be to God.

    Reflection Questions

    • What is a place of restoration for you?
    • How do you imagine God coming to you in a way that feels like Good News?
    • How would life be different for you and your loved ones if you felt whole and restored?

    Worship Song

    Open Space / Make Room

I will make room for You
To do whatever You want to
To do whatever You want to

My heart is an open space
For You to come and have Your way
    I’m open, I’m open

Pull me in closer, close to Your heart
May I be a pure reflection
    of who You are

Love that is patient, love that is kind
    Love that keeps no offenses
    or wrongs in mind

    Make me like Jesus
    Make me like Jesus

My heart is an open space

    Sound of Adoration

    When we were lost ones
You were the Shepherd that carried us home
    When we were prodigals
You ran to meet us with open arms
And we can’t hold back our praise

    When we were refugees
You were the One who took us in
    When we were enemies
You paid the price for all our sin
And we can’t hold back our praise

This is the sound of adoration
    Oh, how we love You
    Jesus, we love You

You are the joy of all creation
    Oh, how we love You
    Jesus, we love You

    You are the Risen One
You conquered death and made a way
    You sang our freedom song
Now we are dancing on our chains
And we can’t hold back our praise

By the cross, I am free
    Your grace changes everything
I was blind, now I see
    Your grace changes everything

    Sabbath/Rest Reflections
    1. When/where/how do you feel deeply loved and fully embraced as you are? When was the last time you were able to experience this?
    2. When/where/how do you feel wholly yourself? (Think of the words you used to describe yourself from yesterday’s practice).
    3. Take some time to reflect on your past – those things that have shaped and formed you. Where are the places, who are the people, what are the lessons that have shaped your idea of production, efficiency, maximization, work, and rest, restoration, and sabbath?
    4. What difficulties or compulsions make it hard for you to stop?
    5. Take a moment to review your sabbath practices thus far. What have they looked like?
    6. Can you map out a rhythm of rest as you look at your calendar?
    7. The people of God would take the preparation of the Sabbath seriously, so that they could fully rest on the day of Sabbath. What kind of preparation would you need to do in order to be able to rest?
    8. Do you find that sometimes you consider rest as other forms of work (eg: cooking, cleaning, etc)? What will help you to identify what is truly restful and what is work disguised as rest?
    9. Sabbath, in its purest form, entails ritual, something that we do regularly, each time, to mark an occasion. Rituals can usher in meaning. Is there a ritual that will help you usher in your Sabbath? (lighting a candle, listening to music, using a certain mug for your coffee/tea, a prayer that you’ll say)
    10. What do rest and play look like for you? How often are you able to take part in these activities of rest and play?
    11. Take some time to dream of a Sabbath day. What would a day dedicated to replenishing yourself — soul, mind, and body — look like? What would a period longer than a day look like?

    Centering Practice

Let’s center ourselves in the light & love of Jesus today.

    • Close your eyes and take 4 or 5 deep breaths
    • Picture a time or place when you felt brightness and/or warmth in a way that was meaningful for you (sunrise, campfire, from the cold, during a blackout)
    • Now, ask God to help you shine like that kind of light for others

    Call to Worship

Jesus is the Light of the World,
shining bright to guide us through darkness.
In Christ, we find true life.

Those who are wise shall shine
like the brightness of the sky,
and those who lead the many to righteousness,
like the stars forever and ever. Amen.

    Psalm 147:1-5

    Praise the Lord!
How good it is to sing praises to our God,
for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.
    The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
    He heals the brokenhearted
        and binds up their wounds.
    He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names.
    Great is our Lord and abundant in power;
        his understanding is beyond measure.

The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth…

10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them, and he did not do it.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
    Together: Thanks be to God.

    Worship Song

    Open Up

All that we do without love
    It means nothing
Grant us the courage to give
    As You’re calling

    Make me an instrument
    Of Your peace
    Where there is hatred
    Let me sow love

    Where there is darkness
    Let me shine light and…

    May Your love
    Cause us to open up
Cause us to open up our hearts

    May Your light
Cause us to shine so bright
That we bring hope into the dark

    Hope for the hopeless
    Your love is

    Strength in our weakness
    Your love is

    May we love
    As You love

    Centering Practice

Let’s center ourselves in Jesus’ love once again with a breath prayer:

    • Breathe in: God is love
    • Breathe out: I am loved
    • After 4 or 5 deep breaths, turn to your neighbor and tell them, “You are loved!”

    Call to Worship

    Based on Joel 2

    We return to God with all our hearts;
to the One who is gracious and merciful,
    who abounds in steadfast love.

May God pour out the Holy Spirit,
that everyone one of us would dream again,
and our vision would be renewed. Amen.

    Worship Songs

    Great Things

Come let us worship our King
Come let us bow at His feet
    He has done great things

See what our Savior has done
    See how His love overcomes
    He has done great things
    He has done great things

    O Hero of Heaven
    You conquered the grave
You free every captive and break every chain
O God, You have done great things

We dance in Your freedom, awake and alive
O Jesus, our Savior, Your name lifted high
O God, You have done great things

You’ve been faithful through every storm
    You’ll be faithful forevermore
    You have done great things

And I know You will do it again
For Your promise is “Yes and amen”
    You will do great things
    God, You do great things

    Hallelujah God, above it all
    Hallelujah God, unshakable
Hallelujah, You have done great things

    Hallelujah God, above it all
    Hallelujah God, unshakable
Hallelujah, You have done great things
    You’ve done great things

    Expectation

    You redeem our past
You take what’s old and broken
    You’re breathing in new life

    Rhythms of Your grace
    Moving us to freedom
    From darkness into light

You will make all things new
    You’ll bring Your kingdom here
    We wait in expectation

We lift our eyes to You
    Salvation’s drawing near
    We wait in expectation

    You have overcome
    the troubles we are facing
    You’re standing here with us

    Oppression cannot win
    and anxious thoughts are broken
By the pow’r of Jesus’ name

    You have me
    You have me
    You have my heart completely

Would You come, Lord Jesus, come
    Come, Lord Jesus, come
    Come, Lord Jesus, come

    Community Prayer

O God, even before we were born,
You knew us and knit us together.
How wonderful are all Your works.

    When we are anxious, be our peace;
    When we feel lost, be our light;
When we lose heart, be our hope.

For people and place around the world
who need You, we lift up our prayers:

    — Moment of silent prayer —

Teach us to care for the world You love
so we may live together with wisdom and grace.
    Amen.

    Worship Song

Hope’s Anthem/You Hold It All Together

Our hope is in You God
    We are steadfast
    We will not be moved

    We’re anchored, never shaken
    All our hope is You

You come at the right time
    When I least expect it
    Never behind

So why would I be surprised
    When You deliver every time

On mountaintops, You stay the same
In valleys low, You never change

And I believe that I will see
    The goodness of the Lord
    I’m confident as seasons change
    Your faithfulness remains

You go, You go before me
    To prepare a blessing
    You madе a way

It’s more than I could imagine
    More than I can fathom
    Or comprehend

    God of our present
    God of our future
    You write our story
    You hold it all together

And we believe that we will see
    The goodness of the Lord
    We’re confident as seasons change
    Your faithfulness remains

    Scripture Reading

    Romans 12:9-21

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil; hold fast to what is good; 10 love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not lag in zeal; be ardent in spirit; serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; persevere in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints; pursue hospitality to strangers.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be arrogant, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. 18 If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 Instead, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink, for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
    Together: Thanks be to God.
