Call to Worship
As we journey together
during this Lenten season,
we remember:The everyday places we walk
are holy ground;
and the ordinary people we meet
are deeply loved by God.In these thin spaces,
steadfast love and faithfulness meet.
From ashes and dust, God creates beauty.
Amen.
Worship Song
Great Things
Come let us worship our King
Come let us bow at His feet
He has done great thingsSee what our Savior has done
See how His love overcomes
He has done great things
He has done great thingsO Hero of Heaven
You conquered the grave
You free every captive and break every chain
O God, You have done great thingsWe dance in Your freedom, awake and alive
O Jesus, our Savior, Your name lifted high
O God, You have done great thingsYou’ve been faithful through every storm
You’ll be faithful forevermore
You have done great thingsAnd I know You will do it again
For Your promise is “Yes and amen”
You will do great things
God, You do great things
Kingdom Come
God, let Your kingdom come
May Your will be done
God, let Your kingdom comeEarth is groaning and we are longing
For Your kingdom to come
All creation and all of heaven
Join their voices as oneHope is stirring, joy arising
As we look to the day
When all injustice will bow
And every voice will cry out
Holy is Your nameLift up your heads, all the weak and the poor
The Lord is at hand and His kingdom is yoursLift up your hearts, all who suffer and mourn
The Lord is at hand and His kingdom is yoursLift up your eyes, all who hunger for more
The Lord is at hand and His kingdom is yoursLift up a shout, let the earth hear your voice
The Lord is at hand and His kingdom is yoursI will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken
Prayer of Confession
O God,
You are our shelter from the storm,
a safe refuge in times of sorrow,
and we find our home in You.Where our hearts are dry,
let Living Water flow.
In our darkness, let Light shine.
Hear us, O God, we pray:— Moment of silent prayer —
God of mercy,
forgive our sin and shortcomings,
transform and direct what we shall be,
that we would walk in Your ways, always.
Amen.

Scripture Reading
John 12:20-26
20 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew, then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain, but if it dies it bears much fruit. 25 Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

The Mystery of the Seed
Pastor Jeya
Reflection Questions:
- How would you finish this sentence: I wish I…
- If you find yourself wishing for something material or cosmetic, that’s okay! But try to get to the heart of what you’re really wishing for – why do I wish for this thing? What do I really want?
- Take a minute to pray to God by finishing this sentence, “Would You…?”

The glory of God is revealed in many ways:
Through clouds of splendor, the fire of God’s love,
and the radiant wonder
of Christ transfigured on the mountain.May Light break through the surrounding darkness,
transforming our despair into hope,
and sending us into the world as seeds of hope.
Amen.

The light that shines over everyone
We look to You, we long for You, oh LordWe behold the rising sun
The earth awaits, Your hope has come

Oh, Your name is the word of truth
Oh Your name, oh Your name
This I Know
Up on the mountain
Where Your love captured me
Where finally I’m free
This I knowUp on the mountain
Where You taught my soul to sing
Amazing grace, the sweetest thing
This I knowAnd then the storm rushing in
And here I am again
This I knowTake me up to where I was
When I never wanted more than You
Lift me up to feel Your touch
It wouldn’t be that much for YouThis I know, this I know
This I know…Up on the mountain
Where You took me by the hand
Taught me to dance again
This I knowUp on the mountain
Where You took this heart of stone
Put life back in these bones
This I know

Scripture Reading
Luke 9:28-36
28 Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” — not knowing what he said. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” 36 When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

Send the Rain
Lord, we come to You
Now with open hands
Broken lives and dreams
Washed up on the sandWe’ve been beaten down
But still we choose to stand
We choose to standLord, we long for You
For Your hand to move
Heal this barren land
Come and make it newJesus, You’re the life
That is breaking through
You’re breaking throughThe saints of old in ancient days
They worked the ground
that we reap from todaySo use our hands to cultivate
The harvest that
our children’s children taste
We’re ready God, so send the rainLord, we’ll follow You
To unbroken earth
On the path not used
Where new hope is birthedWe will work as one
Holding to Your truth
To Your truthHeal the ruined cities
We destroyed with our own hands
Bring us back together
Let us see the promised landPour out Your Spirit
On this dry and thirsty ground
O God of the harvest
Could it be right here and now
Could it be right here and nowOpen up the heavens,
let Your rain fall down
We are thirsty, we are thirsty

Sound of Adoration
When we were lost ones
You were the Shepherd that carried us home
When we were prodigals
You ran to meet us with open arms
And we can’t hold back our praiseWhen we were refugees
You were the One who took us in
When we were enemies
You paid the price for all our sin
And we can’t hold back our praiseThis is the sound of adoration
Oh, how we love You
Jesus, we love YouYou are the joy of all creation
Oh, how we love You
Jesus, we love YouYou are the Risen One
You conquered death and made a way
You sang our freedom song
Now we are dancing on our chains
And we can’t hold back our praiseBy the cross, I am free
Your grace changes everything
I was blind, now I see
Your grace changes everything
My Hallelujah
Open up the doors again
Let the King of glory in
His Kingdom will never end
Oh, I know that You are goodBreak the darkness with the light
All the earth let praise arise
Every dead place come alive
Oh, I know that You are good
Oh, I know that You are goodYou will have my hallelujah
You alone the highest name
All to You I surrender
Every breath I take
Make my life Your praiseOh, Spirit of the Living God
Fire burning in my heart
I’m wide awake to who You are
Oh, I know that You are good
Oh, I know that You are goodYou are my strength when I am weak
You are my sight when I can’t see
As praise goes up, I believe
The walls are coming downOh, when I was lost, You rescued me
When I was bound, You set me free
As praise goes up, I believe
The walls are coming down
Community Prayer
Adapted from Dr. Barbara A. Holmes. Dr. Holmes was a spiritual teacher, author, activist, and scholar — as well as President Emerita of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities
Our God
in whom we live and move and have our being,
For the nurture of our many villages of belonging;
for unexpected healing and imaginative pathways;
we give thanks. In our fractured and frustrating time,
we cannot carve out shared destinies in isolation.
Even in our wounded unknowing,
bring us to a place of true contemplation.Open our eyes to wonder and mystery all around us;
open our hearts to authentic connection;
open our hands to become a community of care,
even in the midst of crisis and concern.— Moment of silent prayer —
Spirit of love,
Bring us into inner space so deep, so daringly vast,
that even in the midst of noise around us,
we find stillness and home in You.
Amen.

- Support for World Relief: Our church is sending $1500 to support the work of World Relief in helping refugee families, which will cover rent/utilities for one month for one family. For over 40 years, World Relief has worked with both Republican and Democratic administrations to help resettle over 500,000 refugees. The suspension of the Refugee Resettlement Program and a stop-work order in January means that private donations are the only means of support for 4,000 recent refugees who were already in process of being resettled here.

Then he went and washed and came back able to see. 8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some were saying, “It is he.” Others were saying, “No, but it is someone like him.” He kept saying, “I am he.” 10 But they kept asking him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ Then I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”

Today’s prayer comes from the work of Howard Thurman
O love of God,
without which life has no meaning
and no harbor,Leave us not alone with our little lives,
our broken dreams, our insistent problems,
but invade our spirit with Thy vitalityThat we may be renewed in all the ways of our lives,
that we may turn from this place, this day,
with all that is within us,
washed and purified and refreshed.— Moment of silent prayer —
We seek this with simplicity of heart,
and with quiet faith and confidence
that Thou would not deny Thy love to Thy children.

Call to Worship
During February, we will celebrate Black History Month together as a church. In a world that often dehumanizes and stereotypes, we honor, affirm, and uphold the God-given dignity & worth of our Black siblings. We celebrate the indelible contributions of the Black community to our faith, our culture, and our world. We honor God’s call to celebrate our diversity and our unity in Christ.
Our Call to Worship comes from Howard Thurman’s work, “Meditations of the Heart.” Thurman was born in 1899 and raised in the segregated South. He is recognized as one of the great spiritual leaders of the 20th century renowned for his reflections on humanity and our relationship with God. Thurman was a prolific author (writing at least 20 books); perhaps the most famous is Jesus and the Disinherited (1949), which deeply influenced Martin Luther King, Jr. and other leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. Thurman was the first black person to be a tenured Dean at a PWI (Boston U). He also cofounded the first interracially pastored, intercultural church in the US.

You conquered death and made a way
You sang our freedom song
Now we are dancing on our chains
And we can’t hold back our praiseBy the cross, I am free
Your grace changes everything
I was blind, now I see
Your grace changes everything
Great Are You Lord
You give life
You are love
You bring light to the darknessYou give hope
You restore
every heart that is broken
And great are You, LordIt’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praiseIt’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
To You onlyAll the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
Great are You, Lord
Community Prayer
As Dr. King taught us, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” As we pray together, let’s be a force for goodness & light in our world today. Today, our prayers will be shaped by Dr. King’s own prayers as we think about what it means to join Jesus’ work of healing, justice, and redemption today.
God of love and justice,
help us as individuals and as a world
to hear it now before it is too late:“Seek first the Kingdom of God
and God’s justice
and all these other things will be added unto you.”We have all too often lived by our own selfish impulses
rather than by the sacrificial love revealed by Christ.
We often give in order to receive.
We love our friends and hate our enemies.
We go the first mile but dare not travel the second.— Moment of silent prayer —
O God, have mercy upon us.
If we cannot fly, help us to run;
if we cannot run, help us to walk;
if we cannot walk, help us to crawl.Spirit, in all we do and all we are,
help us to keep moving forward;
Seeing that the time is always right
to do the right thing.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Scripture Reading
John 9:1-12
1 As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. 4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, 7 saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent).

Healing Through the Eyes of Jesus
Pastor David
Reflection Questions:
- Think about your life and our world at the moment. What are things that you are hopeful for and what are things that you are saddened by? Write out areas that you hope to see healing in for our world.
- We will collect these and share among one another anonymously. The hope is we see the world a bit through the lens of others in our church community.
- Spend this week trying to see the world through the lens of the person writing the note and pray for continual healing of our world and others!

Scripture Reading
Numbers 21:1-9
1 When the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the Negeb, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, he fought against Israel and took some of them captive. 2 Then Israel made a vow to the Lord and said, “If you will indeed give this people into our hands, then we will utterly destroy their towns.” 3 The Lord listened to the voice of Israel and handed over the Canaanites, and they utterly destroyed them and their towns; so the place was called Hormah.
4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom, but the people became discouraged on the way. 5 The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.” 6 Then the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the snakes from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a poisonous snake, and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.” 9 So Moses made a snake of bronze and put it upon a pole, and whenever a snake bit someone, that person would look at the snake of bronze and live.

Worship Song
The Kingdom is Yours
Blessed are the ones who do not bury
All the broken pieces of their heart
Blessed are the tears of all the weary
Pouring like a sky of falling starsBlessed are the wounded ones in mourning
Brave enough to show the Lord their scars
Blessed are the hurts that are not hidden
Open to the healing touch of GodThe Kingdom is yours, the Kingdom is yours
Hold on a little more, this is not the end
Hope is in the Lord, keep your eyes on HimAnd blessed are the ones who walk in kindness
Even in the face of great abuse
Blessed are the deeds that go unnoticed
Serving with unguarded gratitudeAnd blessed are the ones who fight for justice
Longing for the coming day of peace
Blessed is the soul that thirsts for righteousness
Welcoming the last, the lost, the leastBlessed are the ones who suffer violence
And still have strength to love their enemies
Blessed is the faith of those who persevere
Though they fall, they’ll never know defeat

Prayers of the People
Every generation faces challenges unique to their own times. In many ways, even as a new administration is inaugurated tomorrow, our nation is deeply divided. Stories of violence, war, and natural disasters happen far too often around our world.
We are reminded of Dr. King’s timeless words, “True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.” As the people of God, we are not without hope; we are called to face the darkness and hold up light — to join Jesus in creating a world where all can experience the fullness of God’s love. So today, after each phrase, we invite you to pray aloud and from your hearts, Lord, have mercy:
For those suffering from violence, war, and natural disasters…
For our country and its leaders, to govern with wisdom and integrity…
For the Church worldwide, to act justly, to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with You…For ourselves and our loved ones,
to be strengthened, healed, and renewed…For our friends who need to know Your love

Our dreams for our church for 2025:
- Kathy: I hope that we as a church can embody Christ’s love, peace, and joy to one another and the world around us as we engage deeply in relationship with God, one another, and the greater community around us.
- Pastor David: My hope for our church in 2025 is that we are not just finding Jesus as our anchor and hope, but we are living that out in our own communities.
- Tae: My hope for our church in 2025 is that this is a year of growth. I believe we have a wonderful church, a wonderful and dedicated pastoral staff, and a mission that is not only rooted in Truth but so relevant for the world today: to bring hope to those who need it — a hope that has been given to us through God’s love.
- Pastor Dan: My dream is that this time next year, each of us will be more open to God, others, and ourselves — and that the journey of openness will fill our hearts with joy, meaning, and encouragement.
- Pastor Jeya: To learn together how we can see hope by being hope in our small corners of the world, which then flows and overflows into the rest of this world.

Opening Prayer
Adapted from A Prayer for Walking into the New Year, by Rev. Karen Rohrer
God of all new years,
As we look out on the horizon,
we admit our weariness —
the memories we carry in our bodies,
the patterns of anxiety we’ve practiced,
and the weight of fears, old fables,
and generational wounds.And yet, God,
You come to us as more than likelihood or probability,
plausible outcomes or logical conclusions.
Your story is the deeper magic
from before the drums of history,
before our forming stories and earthen bodies
set us here to walk this particular, human road.
Somehow, You walk with us,
even here in this in-between space.Spirit of new life,
give us eyes to see the implausible.
Grant us the hope and the diligence to follow
the seeds of revolution and revelation already planted.
Grant us the presence and good sense
to look up and to look out
to the surprise and delight
of nature and neighbor.Remind us that the past,
no matter how burdensome or permanent it feels,
does not govern Your future.
Help us to dream with You —
broader and wider
and newer and brighter
than all we have ever known. As we look out on the horizon of a new year,
give us the courage and trust
to see You even there.
Join us as we walk into Your new morning.Amen.
Shining Star
Shining Star
Shining Star
Come and guide our heartsThe angels watched in mystery
As You took off Your glory
Instead You put on human skin
To reconcile all things againYou stepped into the darkest night
To blaze the skies with heaven’s sign
That we all matter, we are loved
That Your heartbeat’s strong for usWhat a picture of love!
You are magnificent
You are magnificent
You are my RescuerYou light the darkest night
You light the darkest night
You are the Shining StarThe angels watched in mystery
As You bore all our misery
The hands that crafted worlds and stars
Chose the pain of human scarsYou came to die the lowest death
To show the human soul its worth
And as You burst through the darkness
You raised the dead in all of usWhat a portrait of grace!
Passing of the Peace
Take a moment to send greetings of peace to the people around you — perhaps a word of gratitude for the past year or a word of blessing for the year ahead. You can also send a text message to someone either from our Anchor & Hope community or someone else who needs God’s peace this day!

Shine
Shine from the inside out
That the world will see
You live in meYou know me
and You love me
You fill me, so send me to…Know me, love me, fill me, send me
Know me, love me, fill me, send me
Know me, love me, fill me, send me
Kids Reflection
This story comes from Matthew 2:13-18.
When the Wise Men had left, Joseph had a dream. In the dream an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph. “Get up!” the angel said. “Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you to come back. Herod is going to search for the child. He wants to kill him.”
So Joseph got up. During the night, he left for Egypt with the child and his mother Mary. They stayed there until King Herod died. So the words the Lord had spoken through the prophet came true. He had said, “I brought my son out of Egypt.” (Hosea 11:1)
Herod realized that the Wise Men had tricked him. So he became very angry. He gave orders about Bethlehem and the area around it. He ordered all the boys two years old and under to be killed. This agreed with the time when the Wise Men had seen the star. In this way, the words Jeremiah the prophet spoke came true. He had said,
“A voice is heard in Ramah.
It’s the sound of crying and deep sadness.
Rachel is crying over her children.
She refuses to be comforted,
because they are gone.” (Jeremiah 31:15)
Watch the video for this story here:
Have a conversation with your kids about the following “I wonder” questions:
- I wonder what made you smile? I wonder what you found surprising? I wonder if anything didn’t seem to make sense?
- I wonder how close the danger came before Joseph and Mary finally had to make a run for it?
- I wonder how hard it must have been for Mary and Joseph to leave their home country?
- I wonder which part of this story made the biggest impression on you?
- If you were forced to run away from your home, I wonder which five things would you take with you? What if you could take only one item?
- In the Bible it says that both the wise men and later Joseph were guided by God through a dream. I wonder if you think dreams can be special like this?
- I wonder how many different “feelings” or emotions you can list that people experienced in this story?
Prayer for Illumination
God who makes all things new,
Prepare our hearts
to listen to, engage with,
and be transformed by Your Word.
And be with everyone from
our church family this day,
that they may hear from You too.
In Jesus name, Amen.
Scripture Reflection
Read Psalm 80:1-3 out loud:
Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock. You who sit enthroned
between the cherubim,
shine forth before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.Awaken your might;
come and save us.Restore us, O God;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
Together: Thanks be to God.
Did you know that the “Twelve Days of Christmas” is more than just a song with difficult-to-remember lyrics? As Pastor Jeya reminded us recently, the twelve days of Christmas actually begins on Christmas Day and continues until we celebrate Epiphany!
“Epiphany” comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, meaning “appearance” or manifestation. On Epiphany (which is celebrated on the sixth day of January), we celebrate God’s self-revelation to us and to the world in Jesus Christ. Light is a powerful image of this season — just as the star guided the Magi to Jesus and overwhelmed them with joy, we continue to be led by the Light of the World, whose light breaks forth into our darkness with healing in its wings.
Take a moment to reflect on the past year. Consider the following questions about God’s light in your life:
- Did light shine from unexpected places? Were you ever surprised by how you experienced God’s light?
- How did you experience the light of Jesus this year? Guidance, warmth, hope, inspiration, revealing?
The start of a new year often makes us think about new beginnings. For example, it’s a natural and good practice to make some new year’s resolutions (and to give yourself a healthy dose of grace in doing your best to follow through!). As we begin to transition into a new year, take a few moments to talk about the light of Jesus leading you this year:
- Continue to think about the question, “What then will I become?” throughout 2025
- Take some time to prayerfully consider a star word to guide you throughout the year — the focus of this is not on our efforts or determination but, rather, on how God’s face will shine upon us and the ways in which we’ll be changed by Jesus’ light
- One way to think about this is to fill in the blank: “When Jesus’ light shines on me, I will experience ___________” or “I will be _____________” • The word in the blank could be your star word for the year!
- Share your star word with someone else. If you’d like, you can also explain a little bit more about why it’s meaningful for you!
New Year
My heart beats like a drum
Flying up with the sun
I grab Your hand againRenovated with life
My eyes again bright
And You are radiantWhere hope can hold the hand of sorrow
and we can walk into tomorrow
Where peace is found in troubled days
And the joy of Jesus carries painThis is a new year
This is new day
To rise shine, lift up your eyes
This is a new year
This is a new day to rise shine
And point the way to God’s great lifeI’m held in a place
A beautiful space
where heaven meets the earthMy heart opens wide
And the Father pours life
Deep inside my soul
Closing Prayer
Based on Isaiah 60 & 2 Corinthians 4
Arise, shine,
for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord
has risen upon you.Lift up your eyes and look around;
For God, who said,
“Let light shine out of darkness”
makes light shine in your hearts.
Amen.
