Centering Practice

We invite you to slow down, breathe, and connect with God, each other, and yourself. Begin by taking a couple of slow, deep breaths.

  • As you breathe in, squeeze your hands together and pray silently, “Lord Jesus”
  • As you breathe out, loosen them and pray silently, “Have mercy”
  • We’ll do this three times together

Call to Worship

In sovereign love, God created the world good.
Each of us is made in the image of God.
We are being called to wholeness and holiness.

Let us love God, our neighbors, and ourselves
with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Amen.

Worship Songs

Beautiful One / Oh Our Lord

You opened my eyes
to Your wonders anew
You captured my heart
with this love
Nothing on earth
is as beautiful as You

Beautiful One, I love You
Beautiful One, I adore
Beautiful One, my soul must sing

We behold the breaking dawn
The light that shines over everyone
We look to You, we long for You, oh Lord

We behold the rising sun
The earth awaits, Your hope has come
We look to You, we long for You, oh Lord

Oh, oh, oh, our Lord
Oh, oh, oh, our Lord
How majestic is Your name in all the earth

We behold the falling rain
Like waters rise, flood this place
We reach for You, we cling to You, oh Lord

Oh, Your name is a light in the darkness
Oh, Your name is the word of truth
Oh Your name, oh Your name

Sound of Adoration

When we were lost ones
You were the Shepherd that carried us home
When we were prodigals
You ran to meet us with open arms
And we can’t hold back our praise

When we were refugees
You were the One who took us in
When we were enemies
You paid the price for all our sin
And we can’t hold back our praise

This is the sound of adoration
Oh, how we love You
Jesus, we love You

You are the joy of all creation
Oh, how we love You
Jesus, we love You

You are the Risen One
You conquered death and made a way
You sang our freedom song
Now we are dancing on our chains
And we can’t hold back our praise

By the cross, I am free
Your grace changes everything
I was blind, now I see
Your grace changes everything

Prayer of Confession

Faithful God,
Your steadfast love and mercy
extend as far as the east is from the west.

As the deer longs for water, we need You.
Restore our souls and make us whole.
Hear us, O God, we pray:

— Moment of silent prayer —

Loving God,
Renew us to follow Your ways
of mercy, wisdom, compassion, and grace.
Amen.

Assurance of God’s Love

Prayers of the People

Today, as we remember the people and places God has placed on our hearts,
we join together in the prayer Jesus taught us, saying:

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power
and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Announcements
  • Thanks for worshiping with us today! We hope you experience meaningful connection with God and others in our community. If you’re visiting for the first time today, we’d love to get to know you better. Please take home a visitor’s card with QR code so that we can stay in touch & build a relationship!
  • Welcome Back! We’re so glad to welcome back our college students! We invite everyone to stick around after service today for our monthly meal
  • 501c3 Launch Date: We launch as an independent nonprofit organization this week! Please write checks to Anchor & Hope Church (and continue to use Tithely as you normally do). We’re glad to step into this next chapter of life & ministry together!
  • Church Retreat: Starting this Friday and going through Sunday (that means we will not gather for worship at Sandburg next Sunday, the 20th). Please talk to Howard if you haven’t registered yet!
  • National Hispanic Heritage Month: We celebrate the many ways our Hispanic siblings enrich our lives, communities, and nation. This celebration goes from September 15 to October 15 — the start date reflects historically significant independence dates for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua (as well as the 16th for Mexico, and the 18th for Chile).
  • Mira Mesa Street Fair: Our church will once again host a booth at the Street Fair on Saturday, October 3rd (setup at 9:00 am, tear down at 5:00 pm). We’re looking for volunteers throughout the day as we seek to be good neighbors and share the creative, hope-filled love of Christ with all!

Passing of the Peace

Let’s greet each other at this time!

Blessing of the Children

Worship Song

Mercies (New Every Morning)

In brokenness and wandering
Through all my fear and unbelief
Your faithfulness appears to me again

Through mountain top and valley low
In every season, this I know
Your goodness, like the dawn, will break again

All Your mercies rising
In this heart again
And my soul begins to sing

They are new every morning
New every morning
Great is Your faithfulness
Your mercies are new every morning
New every morning
Great is Your faithfulness

Every good and perfect gift
In Your endless grace You give
Flowing from the Father’s heart to mine

Beams of heaven as I go
Through this wilderness below
The fullness of Your love for all of time

Scripture Reading

John 10:11-15

11 (Jesus said) “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.”

This is the Word of the Lord.
Together: Thanks be to God.

Worship Song

Here’s My Heart

Here’s my heart Lord
Here’s my heart Lord
Here’s my heart Lord
Speak what is true

I am found, I am Yours
I am loved, I’m made pure

I have life, I can breathe
I am healed, I am free

You are strong, You are sure
You are life, You endure

You are good, always true
You are light breaking through

You are more than enough
You are here, You are love

You are hope, You are grace
You’re all I have, You’re everything
